Set in the sultry, moss-draped South, Spirit Willing: A Savannah Haunting offers a tale of conniving and greed. It concerns the extremes to which Charlotte Horner will go to oust her aging Aunt Olivia from her historic Savannah home, not only “to put it to better use” but also to exact revenge. With the help of Great Great Grandfather Cyrus, dead for 100 years, Olivia sets about to foil Charlotte’s plans. In time this alliance causes Olivia’s staunchest supporters—even the lady herself—to question her mental stability, a situation that plays neatly into Charlotte’s devious hands. The love between Charlotte’s brother, a struggling artist, and his British model ultimately helps to resolve the conflict, but not before his avaricious sister has done her worst. Does Cyrus exist? Or does he live merely in Olivia’s imagination? In this ghost story for non-believers, only the reader knows for sure.

Reader Responses

“Enjoyed Spirit Willing: A Savannah Haunting. The story moves right along, but time is taken to develop the main characters. Appropriate and clean conclusion to the book. Some examples of strong, emotional writing, e.g., when Alexander looks around his old room at home in Savannah for the first time in years. The book provides a good chance to expand one’s ghostly argot!” — Bill Belt (Middleton, WI)

“Spirit Willing: A Savannah Haunting is a fun ghost story. I’ve never cared much about the bad guy, in this case played by the niece Charlotte Horner, but in Spirit Willing I enjoyed it each time Charlotte got stopped dead in her tracks. It is a must read and one you won’t be able to put down. I loved it!” -Jossie Bustos (Savannah, GA)

“It isn’t often that I have deliberately refrained from getting to the end of a book because I simply didn’t want it to end. Spirit Willing: A Savannah Haunting by Susan B. Johnson is that kind of feast for my palate. Her characters’ histories are beautifully woven into the story like a fine colored tapestry. If anyone reading this has never experienced love-making in color, please go to page 153 of this book. This writer is a consummate artist, covering all the bases for a reader to experience these lives well-lived. I can’t wait for the next feast from Susan B. Johnson.”-Carolyn Siefferman (Savannah, GA)

“Spirit Willing: A Savannah Haunting is a perfect armchair vacation. It’s an intriguing story, both witty and touching, rounded out with one seriously scary character. I loved this escape to the history and mystery of Savannah.” — K. Thompson (Tinley Park, IL)
